With three weeks to go until launch, one of the most-asked GTA 6 questions is still about frame rate: will GTA 6 run at 60fps? Based on what Rockstar North’s head of development has said, the answer at launch appears to be no. GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on consoles, and a performance mode is still undecided. Here’s everything we actually know, and what’s still rumour.
Quick answer: Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, reportedly said that “the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second”. He added that whether a 60fps option exists “at launch (or in the future)” still needed discussion with the technical team. Rockstar has not confirmed any PS5 Pro enhancement or a 60fps mode. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Where the 30fps information comes from
It’s important to be precise about the source. The 30fps detail didn’t come from an official Rockstar press release. It came from YouTuber Davy Jones, who visited Rockstar North and spoke with Rob Nelson. In an interview with the outlet Flow Games in August 2026, he relayed Nelson’s comment: “the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.” Kotaku translated and widely reported the story, and outlets including TechRadar picked it up.
According to the same report, Nelson said the team still had to consult the technical team on whether a 60fps option would exist at launch or later. He also said he didn’t have details on resolution or ray tracing.
The Extended Look gameplay that premiered on Netflix in August was confirmed to be running on a base PS5, so it’s widely assumed that footage was also 30fps.
Platform-by-platform: what we know
| Platform | Frame rate | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 30fps | Per Rob Nelson’s reported comments |
| Xbox Series X | 30fps | Per the same comments (“the consoles”) |
| Xbox Series S | Not detailed | A confirmed launch platform; no specific performance info |
| PS5 Pro | Unconfirmed | No official PS5 Pro enhancement or 60fps announced |
| PC | N/A | No PC version dated yet |
Will there be a 60fps performance mode?
Not confirmed. Nelson’s reported comments leave the door open, both “at launch” and “in the future”. That matches how Rockstar handled Red Dead Redemption 2, which never got an official current-gen 60fps patch on console. Some leaked reports have suggested a performance mode in the 40 to 60fps range, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any of them, so treat them with caution.
Some critics, including TechRadar, have argued that a 40fps mode on PS5 Pro would be a good middle ground. It needs a 120Hz display, but it feels noticeably smoother than 30fps without the cost of full 60fps.
Why would Rockstar choose 30fps?
Everything Rockstar has shown points to an extremely demanding simulation:
- A map roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s, with “an order of magnitude more interiors”.
- Dense crowds built from around 600,000 animations, with NPCs that have temperaments and memories.
- Localised, persistent weather with hurricanes, a new wind system and dynamic water.
- Over 170 animal species and a reactive police “heat” system.
Locking to 30fps gives the CPU time to simulate all of this consistently. Rockstar has historically chosen visual fidelity and world density over frame rate on console.
Is 30fps a deal-breaker?
For many players, no. GTA 5 launched at 30fps (or less) on PS3 and Xbox 360, and Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 30fps on PS4 and Xbox One and is still considered a technical showcase. What matters most is consistent frame pacing, meaning a stable 30 rather than one that dips. If you’re particularly sensitive to frame rate, it may be worth waiting for reviews, or for any future PS5 Pro or PC version.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
Not on the current evidence. Without a confirmed PS5 Pro enhancement, there’s no guarantee of a higher frame rate. If you’re deciding on hardware, see our breakdown of what GTA 6 really costs in India, including consoles.
