Quick answer: GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. And Rockstar has already started talking about what comes after GTA 6: its studio heads say the next game won’t take another eight years, because the engine, tools and team built for GTA 6 can be reused. Beyond that, most of what fans discuss (Red Dead 3, a new L.A. Noire, Bully 2) is still speculation. Here is a clear breakdown of what’s confirmed and what isn’t.
This article was inspired by YouTuber Nino‘s video “The Future of Rockstar Games”, which walks through Rockstar’s history and its possible plans. Watch it below; we’ve checked the key points against official statements and reports.
How Rockstar went from a game a year to one a decade
In the 2000s, Rockstar released games at a remarkable pace. GTA III (2001), Vice City (2002) and San Andreas (2004) came out within about three years, alongside titles like Manhunt, The Warriors, Bully, Midnight Club and Red Dead Revolver. Then came GTA IV (2008), Red Dead Redemption (2010), L.A. Noire (2011) and Max Payne 3 (2012).
After GTA V in 2013, things slowed dramatically. Rockstar’s only major new single-player game since then has been Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. GTA 6 arrives about 13 years after GTA V.
Why? Two big reasons:
- Games got enormous. Open worlds with this level of detail, voice acting and systems take thousands of people and many years.
- GTA Online kept paying. GTA V and its online mode kept earning money for over a decade, so there was less pressure to rush out the next game.
Will the next Rockstar game take eight years?
According to Rockstar, no. In an interview with Bloomberg reported in mid-October 2026, studio heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut said the engine, tools and team built during GTA 6 will let them work faster on the next project. Hooker said they can now “go more sideways than upwards”, meaning they can build on the existing tech rather than rebuild it from scratch.
There is a precedent: GTA Vice City came out roughly a year after GTA III because the groundwork was already in place. Nobody expects a one-year turnaround today, but a gap of a few years instead of eight is realistic.
The RAGE engine: Rockstar’s secret weapon
Rockstar builds its games on its own in-house engine, RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine), which has powered everything since GTA IV. Each big game pushes the engine further, and GTA 6’s version is the most advanced yet. Because Rockstar owns the engine outright, whatever it built for GTA 6’s lighting, crowds, water and physics can carry straight into the next game.
GTA 6 Online: what we know
Officially, very little. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6 or a date for one. When asked about GTA Online’s future, Take-Two has said Rockstar will address it “when it is ready”.
That hasn’t stopped speculation. In September 2026, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy suggested the next GTA Online experience is coming “next year”, but he doesn’t speak for Rockstar, and Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any timeline. Given how much money GTA Online has made, it would be a huge surprise if GTA 6 didn’t get its own online mode eventually.
Roleplay could be bigger than ever
GTA roleplay servers, where players act out lives as cops, criminals, medics and business owners, became one of the most-watched things on Twitch. In 2023, Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, the platforms that power most of these servers. That gives Rockstar the people and know-how to support roleplay in GTA 6, though it hasn’t announced official plans yet.
What about the PC version?
GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. Historically, its big games have reached PC later: GTA V arrived on PC about a year and a half after its console launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year after. Red Dead 3, L.A. Noire, Max Payne, Midnight Club and Bully
These are the games fans most want next. Here is where each stands:
| Game | Status |
|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 3 | Not announced. Widely expected at some point, given RDR2’s success. |
| Max Payne 1 & 2 remake | Confirmed. Being developed by Remedy in partnership with Rockstar; Remedy reported it in full production in early 2026. No release date. |
| L.A. Noire sequel | Not announced. |
| Bully 2 | Not announced. Rumoured for years. |
| Midnight Club | Not announced. No new game since 2008. |
The Max Payne remake is the only one that is actually confirmed. Everything else is fan hope, not news.
Take-Two’s bigger pipeline
Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has a busy schedule beyond GTA. In its May 2026 earnings update it outlined more than two dozen games planned through fiscal 2029, including new original games, sequels and remakes across its labels (2K, Rockstar and Zynga’s mobile studios). Not all of those are Rockstar titles, and Take-Two hasn’t said which future games come from Rockstar.
Dan Houser’s new studio
One person who won’t be part of Rockstar’s future is Dan Houser, the co-founder and lead writer behind GTA and Red Dead, who left Rockstar in 2020. He now runs Absurd Ventures, which is building:
- A Better Paradise, a sci-fi world that began as an audio drama and novel, with an open-world action game in development. South Korean company Smilegate agreed in 2025 to publish the game.
- Absurdaverse, a comedy universe with animation and an action-adventure game planned.
Neither game has a release date. GTA 6 will be the first mainline GTA without Houser’s writing.
Rockstar’s big bet
Everything rides on GTA 6. Take-Two has said it expects record results once the game is out, and a strong launch would fund Rockstar’s next decade. The key question for fans is whether Rockstar can now balance two things it has struggled to do together: support a huge online game and ship new single-player games more often. The studio heads’ comments suggest that’s the plan.
What’s next for Rockstar: our take
- Near term (2026–27): GTA 6 launch, then post-launch updates. An online mode and a PC version are likely but unannounced.
- Mid term: the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake from Remedy.
- Longer term: Rockstar’s next big single-player game, which its leaders say won’t take eight years. Red Dead 3 is the fan favourite, but nothing is confirmed.
