Quick answer: GTA VI is set in Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, split into six official regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Rockstar hasn’t said which real places each one copies, but its own descriptions line up closely with Miami, the Florida Keys, the Everglades, the Panhandle coast, Florida’s sugar country and its northern forests. Here is our region-by-region guide.
How to read this guide: region names, taglines and descriptions are official, from Rockstar’s “Only in Leonida” pages. The real-world comparisons are GyaanHub’s analysis, based on Rockstar’s descriptions and Florida geography. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed them.
How big is Leonida?
- Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut told Game Informer the map is around twice the size of GTA V’s.
- Rockstar’s Rob Nelson said Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos, GTA V’s city, and the towns outside it are 11 times the size of GTA V’s small towns.
- No official map is out yet. Rockstar says a full map poster comes in The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, released on 19 November.
The six regions of Leonida
1. Vice City: “Everything in Excess”
Rockstar’s description: “the sun and fun capital of America”, with Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and the VC Port.
Real-world match: Miami. Ocean Beach mirrors Miami Beach and its Art Deco strip, Little Cuba mirrors Little Havana, and the port matches PortMiami, one of the world’s busiest cruise ports. A Florida-based reviewer at Game Informer called Vice City “spot-on”.
2. Leonida Keys: “Gateway to Paradise”
Rockstar’s description: a tropical island chain on “some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America”.
Real-world match: the Florida Keys, a string of islands south of Miami linked by long road bridges, the famous Overseas Highway. This is also where Jason lives at the start of the story.
3. Grassrivers: “Welcome to the Wetlands”
Rockstar’s description: a mangrove wetland known for alligators.
Real-world match: the Everglades, the huge subtropical wetland west of Miami nicknamed the “River of Grass”. Expect airboats, which Rockstar has confirmed as an activity, and plenty of gators.
4. Port Gellhorn: “Live Hard”
Rockstar’s description: “Leonida’s forgotten coast”, a former holiday spot full of cheap motels and closed attractions.
Real-world match: Florida’s Panhandle and Gulf Coast beach towns, places that boomed with tourists decades ago and are now faded. Florida’s own “Forgotten Coast” is a stretch of the Panhandle, which makes the name an obvious nod.
5. Ambrosia: “Keeping Leonida Sweet”
Rockstar’s description: central Leonida, built around the Allied Crystal sugar refinery, with a local biker gang.
Real-world match: Florida’s sugar country around Lake Okeechobee, where small towns grew up around sugar cane and refineries. One of them, Clewiston, calls itself “America’s Sweetest Town”, which matches Ambrosia’s tagline.
6. Mount Kalaga: “Wild, Wild Country”
Rockstar’s description: a national park on the northern border, known for hunting, fishing and off-road trails.
Real-world match: the forests and parks of north and central Florida, such as the Ocala and Apalachicola national forests. Florida has no real mountains, so a “Mount” is Rockstar’s creative addition for off-road and mountain-bike play.
