Classic storylines
Forever Young goes for back-to-back wins
Japan’s Forever Young won last year’s Classic at Del Mar and comes in with 12 wins from 16 starts and more than $32 million in career earnings. He is the morning-line favourite, but he lost to Magnitude in the Dubai World Cup in March, so he isn’t unbeatable.
Sovereignty’s comeback
Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year, won last year’s Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers. His 2026 campaign has been mixed: second in the Oaklawn Handicap, third in the Stephen Foster, then a win in the Whitney. Trainer Bill Mott also saddles Knightsbridge, giving him two of the top three in the betting.
Magnitude the giant-killer
Steve Asmussen’s Magnitude already has a win over Forever Young, in Dubai. Several handicappers see him as the value pick from post 6 with Flavien Prat riding.
The three-year-olds
Golden Tempo, The Puma, Knightsbridge and Napoleon Solo bring the next generation’s challenge. Golden Tempo’s trainer Cherie DeVaux would make history as the first woman to train a Classic winner.
Other races to watch on Saturday
- Distaff: Nitrogen (Mark Casse) is the morning-line favourite, with Splendora a popular alternative.
- Turf: Defending champion Ethical Diamond and Europe’s Benvenuto Cellini.
- Mile: Charlie Appleby’s defending champion Notable Speech.
Keeneland’s fourth Breeders’ Cup
This is the fourth time Keeneland has hosted the Breeders’ Cup, after 2015, 2020 and 2022. Wagering is open from 43 international jurisdictions. Saturday’s Pick 6 and Pick 5s have mandatory payouts, which usually means big pools.
If you choose to bet, please gamble responsibly and only with money you can afford to lose. Betting is only for adults where it’s legal.
