Thunder Sign Ochai Agbaji After Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace Injuries: What He Brings to OKC

The Oklahoma City Thunder are signing free agent wing Ochai Agbaji to fill their 15th roster spot after season-altering injuries to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.

Thunder Sign Ochai Agbaji After Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace Injuries: What He Brings to OKC

The Oklahoma City Thunder have moved quickly to patch a depleted wing rotation. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Thunder are signing free agent Ochai Agbaji to their final standard roster spot. The move comes days after OKC learned that starters Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both need surgery.

Quick answer: Ochai Agbaji, the 2022 NCAA champion and No. 14 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is joining the Thunder as their 15th man. He was waived by the New York Knicks on October 15. OKC needed wing depth after Jalen Williams (fractured fibula, dislocated ankle) and Cason Wallace (torn shoulder labrum) were ruled out for significant time. Contract terms haven’t been announced.

Why the Thunder needed Agbaji

OKC’s unbeaten start ended in the worst way. Jalen Williams was stretchered off against the Clippers and later diagnosed with a fractured fibula and dislocated left ankle requiring surgery. Days later the team confirmed that Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his shoulder and also needs surgery. Losing two starting-calibre wings and defenders left Mark Daigneault short on size and perimeter defence, especially after Wednesday’s 120-96 loss at Dallas.

The Thunder had already added Micah Peavy on a two-way contract. Agbaji gives them a more experienced wing on a standard deal ahead of Saturday’s game against the Houston Rockets.

A career on the move

Agbaji arrived in the NBA with a big reputation. At Kansas he was a consensus first-team All-American, Big 12 Player of the Year and the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player as the Jayhawks won the 2022 national title.

Cleveland drafted him 14th overall, but he was traded to Utah within months as part of the deal that brought Donovan Mitchell to the Cavaliers. He moved to Toronto in February 2024 and to Brooklyn in a three-team trade in February 2026. Last season he averaged 4.3 points in 42 games for Toronto and 6.7 points in 20 games for Brooklyn, where he shot a much-improved 34.9% from three. He signed with the Knicks in September but was waived before the season.

What he brings to Oklahoma City

  • Size on the wing. At 6-foot-5 with a strong frame, he can take on bigger guards and wings, which is what OKC lost with Williams and Wallace out.
  • Defensive effort. Agbaji has always been valued more for his defence and energy than his creation, which suits the Thunder’s switching, high-pressure style.
  • Spot-up shooting. His three-point percentage has gone up and down, but he can space the floor next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
  • Low risk. He fills the 15th spot. If he doesn’t fit, OKC keep their flexibility before the trade deadline.

The bigger picture for OKC

Agbaji isn’t a replacement for Jalen Williams, an All-NBA-level wing. He is a stop-gap who lets OKC keep their depth while rookies and young players such as Ajay Mitchell take on bigger roles. With the Thunder now one of the most watched teams in the trade market, more moves are possible before February.
