Just three weeks before launch, Rockstar has opened the doors once more. Edge magazine issue #430, on sale today (October 29, 2026), carries a 16-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story written by journalist Simon Parkin after a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Edge watched around 90 minutes of live gameplay on PlayStation 5 and spoke with the studio’s leadership. The result is the most detailed look yet at how GTA 6 actually plays, not just how it looks, and it comes with a fresh set of official screenshots. Below you’ll find every new screenshot, every new detail, and what is genuinely new compared with what Rockstar had already shown.

Quick answer: Edge’s feature confirms that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map, with nearly as much land as GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. It introduces a Criminal Profile (Professional to Irredeemable) that affects the story and a witness-and-CCTV-based police heat system. Jason and Lucia’s relationship is tracked on a four-level scale. New phone apps include Scooter Bros (vehicle delivery) and WAINK (cars wanted by fences). Buses and trains work, the day-night cycle is longer, and there are about 600,000 animations. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

All the new GTA 6 screenshots from the Edge feature

Rockstar supplied a set of bespoke screenshots for the Edge feature. Here they are, with what each one ties to in the article. These are early-release images, so fan breakdowns of every pixel are still coming in. We note below what is confirmed by Edge and what is only visible in the image.

1. Vice City

Vice City sits at the heart of Leonida, and Edge’s coverage of the city ties to one of the biggest confirmed changes: roads and highways are narrower than in GTA V, making the city feel more like a real Florida metropolis than a racing track. Rockstar also says the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than its earlier titles. That means more of the buildings you see in shots like this can actually be entered.

2. Jason with a weapon

This shot links to one of the most interesting new systems: how you carry a weapon now matters. Pedestrians react to visible weapons even if you’re not aiming them. A shotgun slung over the shoulder causes less panic than one held in your hands, and some locals will confront you rather than run. Players can also drop weapons, and some situations can be de-escalated before you ever get a wanted level.

3. Lucia with a weapon

In the demo, Nelson switched to Lucia mid-chase so she could shoot at pursuers while Jason drove. You can swap between the two protagonists, similar to GTA V. Edge stresses the big difference: Jason and Lucia share an emotional history, while Michael, Franklin and Trevor mostly didn’t.

4. Jason and Lucia during a car robbery

Carjacking is no longer a free action. According to Edge, some drivers are armed and will fight back, some owners flee, and high-end cars can carry trackers that report their location to police. The new WAINK app lists the models fences want and their security features, and your payout depends partly on the car’s condition when you deliver it.

5. Jason and Lucia at a club

Clubs are among the activities listed in the feature. They also tie into the brand-new relationship system: the closeness between Jason and Lucia is tracked on a four-point scale that typically rises the more time they spend together. Shared activities mentioned by Edge include walking on the beach, cycling, driving around, and going to the gym once you’ve bought a membership.

6. A tattoo scene

Tattoos have been part of GTA customisation since San Andreas, and this image points to that culture being part of Leonida’s everyday life. The Edge text does not detail tattoo customisation menus, so treat any claims about expanded tattoo options as unconfirmed for now. What is confirmed is that clothing and appearance matter more than ever, because police use your description to track you (more below).

7. Bikers

Motorbikes featured heavily in the demo. After a botched robbery, Jason and Lucia fled on a stolen motorcycle until police laid a stinger strip. The front tyre burst, both were thrown off, and a police K-9 unit pinned Jason down. Edge also notes that pedestrians and drivers differ by district, so the groups you meet out in rural Leonida behave differently from those in Vice City.

8. A shark off the coast

Underwater environments are part of the new imagery. This builds on Game Informer’s earlier report of more than 170 wildlife species. Edge adds that the weather simulation (wind, humidity, moving clouds) directly affects water, boats and aircraft, so storms will make sea trips noticeably rougher.

9. The swamps

The swamp shot shows how much of Leonida lies outside the city. Rockstar’s research for the setting goes back to a 2015 trip to Miami to study locations and Florida culture. For a region-by-region comparison, see our GTA 6 Leonida map vs real Florida guide.

Biggest new findings from the Edge feature

Much of the GTA 6 picture was already public through the trailers, the Netflix showcase and Game Informer’s cover story. These are the details Edge adds or makes clearer for the first time.

The Criminal Profile: Professional to Irredeemable

GTA 6 tracks how you commit crimes, not just whether you do. The Criminal Profile runs on a spectrum from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons. You can threaten people, knock enemies out, or go straight to lethal force, and Rockstar says those choices affect the story. You cannot choose to stop being a criminal, though. Jason and Lucia’s life of crime is fixed. What you shape is what kind of criminals they are.

Police “heat” works on evidence

Police build their picture of you from witnesses, CCTV, your clothing, physical description, weapons and whether you had a partner, shown through icons on screen. To shake the heat you can change clothes, ditch the weapon, or split up from your partner. Rockstar has replaced the old instant-teleport wanted stars with something closer to a real manhunt.

A four-level relationship meter

Jason and Lucia’s closeness is measured on a four-point scale. It rises mainly with time spent together. Players can influence the relationship but, as with crime, can’t walk away from the partnership entirely. Rockstar says the Bonnie-and-Clyde pairing was settled after Red Dead Redemption 2 was finished.

NPCs with temperament

A Los Angeles-based team built Leonida’s population, with around 600,000 animations. NPCs react based on temperament, aggression, location, what they witnessed and how you treated them. In the demo, Jason stared at a man walking his dog. The man unclipped the leash and sent the dog after him, scattering pigeons on the way. Edge also describes shoppers stepping in during gas station holdups and drivers challenging you to street races. In one, a customised 4×4 with purple underglow raced Nelson’s family station wagon down the highway.

Your character reacts to the world

Jason and Lucia show disgust at unpleasant places. Aaron Garbut described Jason entering a house with family dog photos on the walls and evidence of a badly behaved dog, and visibly recoiling. It’s a small touch, but it shows the level of reactive animation Rockstar has built in.

New phone apps: Scooter Bros and WAINK

  • Scooter Bros: Pay to have a vehicle delivered. A courier drives it to you, then leaves on a scooter. Your weapons are kept in the vehicle’s trunk.
  • WAINK: Lists vehicles that criminal fences are looking for, with their security and tracking features. Damage reduces your payout.

Fuel, engine health and survival buffs

Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine-health readout. Rockstar has kept refuelling forgiving: a tank lasts a long time and topping up is quick. On foot, coffee boosts stamina and protein shakes boost health. The demo opened with Jason having both in the apartment.

Working buses and trains, and a longer day

Bus and train networks are fully working. Phil Hooker personally tested bus routes for reliability. The day-night cycle is much longer than GTA V’s. Nelson said the old cycle was too fast for a world this detailed.

Story pacing

There are gaps between some story missions, during which Jason and Lucia earn money through smaller jobs, such as holdups and robberies.

Inside Rockstar North: how GTA 6 was made

Edge’s feature also offers rare insight into Rockstar’s process. Development runs in milestones of about six to eight weeks. After each one, Rob Nelson and Sam Houser spend a couple of weeks playing and evaluating the build, and Phil Hooker’s team produces “thousands and thousands” of notes. Garbut describes the process as “constant iteration and regrouping.” Nelson says Sam Houser remains closely involved, discussing the map and story and playing the game himself.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a clear influence. Nelson says RDR2 introduced choices about spending money and being selfish or selfless, and Hooker says its reactive world and overlapping systems carried directly into GTA 6. Work on the two games overlapped for years.

Garbut summed up the scale of the project with a memorable metaphor: “We’ve built a pyramid on Everest.” Nelson, on the moment of release: “It ceases to become ours, and it becomes everybody’s.” And Hooker: “We’ve made what we wanted to make.”

What wasn’t in the Edge feature

  • GTA Online: Not discussed.
  • PC version: Still no date.
  • Music and radio tracklists: Radio stations and adverts are confirmed, but no songs were named.
  • Crunch or working conditions: Not addressed by the interviewees.
