Quick answer: GTA VI launches on Thursday, 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preloading starts on 12 November. Rockstar hasn’t announced an exact unlock time for India, but storefront data suggests the game unlocks at midnight in each region’s main time zone, which for India would likely mean around 12:00 AM IST on 19 November. Treat that as expected, not confirmed. Use this checklist to be ready on day one, and to avoid the scams already circulating.
Launch timeline (IST)
| Date | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Before 12 Nov | Pre-order digitally if you want to preload | Pre-orders open |
| 12 Nov | Digital preload begins on PS5 and Xbox | ✅ Confirmed (date only) |
| 18 Nov, ~4:30 PM IST | New Zealand expected to unlock first worldwide | ⚠️ From store data, not announced |
| 19 Nov, ~12:00 AM IST | India expected to unlock | ⚠️ Not officially confirmed |
| 19 Nov, ~10:30 AM IST | US and Canada expected to unlock | ⚠️ From store data, not announced |
Tip: once your preload finishes, the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store page usually shows a countdown to your account’s unlock time. That’s the most reliable source.
One week before launch (12–18 November)
- Start the preload on 12 November (digital buyers). Physical buyers: redeem the code from the box first, since it is a download code, not a disc.
- Free up space. No official size yet; keep at least 250GB free to be safe.
- PS5: Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → enable “Stay Connected to the Internet”. Turn on automatic downloads and updates.
- Xbox: turn on automatic updates and use Sleep mode instead of full shutdown.
- Use a wired connection if possible. See our download-time guide for how long it may take on Indian broadband.
- Update your console to the latest system software.
Launch night (18–19 November)
- Check for a day-one patch a few hours before unlock and let it download.
- Keep your console online so it can receive the unlock.
- Expect busy servers. Single-player should start fine once unlocked; online features may be slow at first.
- Don’t change your console region to play early. On PS5 the unlock follows your account’s country, and on Xbox it’s an unsupported workaround that may be blocked.
Best settings to check on first launch
- Graphics mode: if offered, choose between a quality mode and a performance mode based on your TV and preference.
- Subtitles and language: set them before the opening cutscenes.
- HDR calibration: run it once if your TV supports HDR.
- Controls: check aim assist and camera sensitivity.
Avoid these GTA VI scams in India
- “GTA 6 PC download” / APK / ISO files: there is no PC or mobile version. These are malware. One 113GB “GTA 6 ISO” was confirmed as malware.
- “Early access” keys or codes: no edition gets early access. Anyone selling it is scamming.
- Cheap game codes from social media sellers: buy only from PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or trusted retailers.
- Giveaways asking for your PSN/Xbox login, OTP or UPI PIN: never share these with anyone.
- Fake “leaked” story spoilers designed to get clicks or spread malware links.
Refund note
On PlayStation, digital pre-orders can normally be cancelled within 14 days of purchase and only before the content is downloaded or preloaded. Once you start preloading, you generally can’t cancel.
