How big is this IPO?

At about ₹30,213 crore, this is one of the largest IPOs India has seen. Jio Platforms will have about 920.9 crore shares after the issue. At the upper price band, that works out to a market value of roughly ₹10.3 lakh crore (our own calculation from the share count and price band).

What will the money be used for?

  • Paying off part of the borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL), its main telecom subsidiary.
  • General corporate purposes.

Because it is a fresh issue, all the money goes to the company rather than to existing shareholders selling their stake.

Key risks listed in the offer documents

  • Dependence on telecom licences and spectrum, and the cost of renewing or buying more.
  • Heavy reliance on one subsidiary, RJIL, for almost all revenue and profit.
  • Agreements with Reliance group companies, including Reliance Retail as the sole distributor of prepaid services.
  • Network outages, fast technology change and new competition, including satellite broadband.

How to apply

  1. Log in to your broker app (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One and others) or your bank’s net banking (ASBA).
  2. Open the IPO section and choose Jio Platforms.
  3. Enter the number of lots and your bid price. Retail investors can tick “cut-off” to bid at the final price.
  4. Approve the UPI mandate on your UPI app before the cut-off time on 23 October. Your money stays blocked, not debited, until allotment.

Retail investors can apply for up to ₹2 lakh. If the retail portion is oversubscribed, allotment is decided by a computerised lottery that tries to give one lot to as many applicants as possible.
